The premiere and co-publishing signing ceremony of China’s Role in a Shared Human Future was held on 10th April at the London International Book Fair, Olympia Exhibition Center. China International Publishing Group, New World Press and Global China Press signed the agreement to co-publish the book. China’s Role in a Shared Human Future is the fourth volume in Globalization of Chinese Social Sciences book series published by Global China Press. Martin Albrow, Fellow of the British Academy of Social Sciences and Emeritus Vice President of the British Sociological Association, is one of the earliest scholars to put forward the concept of “globalization”. His book The Global Age: State and Society beyond Modernity established the pioneering position in the field of globalization research. In the book China’s Role in a Shared Human Future, Professor Albrow accumulates the wisdom from Max Weber, an important Western theorist during the global transformation period of the 19th to 20th century and relevant researches in contemporary China during the global transformation period of the 20th to 21st century. The author believes that China will contribute to global peace and development, while the United States withdraws from protectionism, and Britain is tangled in its decision to leave the European Union. The concept of shared human future proposed by Xi Jinping is far greater than the concept of globalization, which is a promising solution for countries facing issues such as terrorism and climate change. When dealing with global challenges, this concept advocates an open and collaborative mind. But in the Cold War mentality, the great powers see themselves as rivals. This book discusses in depth the role of China in the future world, including the author’s recent exploration of China’s preparation for a global leadership role.

Martin Albrow and his book China’s Role in a Shared Human Future

Counsellor Mr. Xiang Xiaowei expressed warm congratulations to the publication of this book and thanked Professor Martin Albrow for his ingenuity and theoretical contribution. In his opinion, this book embodies Professor Albrow’s innovative thinking and provides a new perspective for observing the power of China’s development to the world. The book explores China’s role as a major country in the international community and its responsibility. Through comparing the classic sociology theory with the current frontier observations, it is concluded that China will certainly become an important force for promoting global peace and cooperation in the future, which is a pioneering new theoretical contribution with great academic and social significance.

Professor Anthony Giddens prefaced the book. In his speech, he said that this book has achieved a fruitful research on the great changes in human society and the key role China plays in shaping the future development. When the United States withdraws from its global role in the past, China can and should play a decisive role in shaping the world.

Li Chunkai, president of New World Press, stated that the English version of China’s Role in a Shared Human Future was published in cooperation with the Global China Press as another attempt to achieve resource sharing and complementary advantages. The publication of the book will help readers from China and other regions to understand how China participates in global governance and contributes to the future development of mankind. “By this signing opportunity, New World Press hopes to plan more book-selections that are highly thought-provoking and responsive to the concerns of the age through international cooperation, and build a platform for domestic and international scholars to study human and global issues and promote exchanges and understanding between Chinese and foreign cultures and academics.”

Signing the Co-publishing Agreement

The role of China in a shared human future is currently a subject with great concern and research in the international community, especially the British academia. The book’s research and attention on this topic has made it one of the focus on the opening day of the London Book Fair. After the signing ceremony, Albrow also deployed in-depth discussions about the contents with the experts and scholars, which attracted many readers and media at the Book Fair.
